Job vs. Career...

Does the difference matter to you?

The dictionary defines the words "job" and "career" as the following:

Job (job) n 1. A piece of work done as part of the routine of one’s occupation. Something one has to do, a responsibility.
Ca∙reer (ke rer’) n. 2. An occupation or profession followed as one’s lifework.  An occupation, a way of making a living, especially with opportunities for advancement or promotion, and progress through life.

Funny enough, the root word for "job" is an Old English word that means "a lump." The reference is to a quantity, or a "lump" of work.  As it applies today, it's an unrelated period of employment in a series of jobs one may have.

A "career," on the other hand, comes from Middle French and is derived from an earlier word for "car" and then "street." So, a career is a path, it's a journey one takes, a career pathway.

So does this difference matter to you, and if so, which should you choose? A series of jobs that  may fulfill your financial needs and is separate from your personal life, or defined career moves that become building blocks towards accomplishing something you really enjoy and that fits with your lifestyle?  Your decision really depends upon your goals, objectives and how you view work for yourself.
